Text Around an Image
Posted by on Tuesday, December 22, 2009

1. This is my working template. It is a 400x400 pixels. I used a soft gradient background.

And this is my image. My favorite sunflower. This is an extracted actual image which I captured from the church garden. You can see my tutorial here on simple removing background of an image.

2.
Drag this image to the gradient background. Name the image layer as
"sunflower". I position the image at the bottom left corner of the
template.

3. This time we will work for the text path. Click now the Rectangle tool
from the tool palette. To reveal it, right click on Custom Shape tool
and there, choose Rectangle tool
from the options. Make sure that you have clicked the Paths from the Rectangle options.

4. Drag a shape from point 1 to point 2 or to your desired text area.

5.
Since we are going to create a text which will not pass through to our
sunflower image. So, in this case, we will subtract the image area
from our working path. This time, select the Ellipse tool
. It is also located on the toolbar options where you find the Rectangle tool
. Make sure also that you have clicked the Paths and the Subtract from path area from the options.

6. Now drag a circular around the sunflower image. This means that the text we are going to make will not pass on this subtracted area. If you click the Path palette, you will see our working are. The white indicates our working text area and the gray is the subtracted area. This means that our text will only appear on the white area.
NOTE: On actual, you will see only almost half of your dragged ellipse because it is already out of the template. This screenshot below is just for preview only.

7. We are now going to make our text. Click the Horizontal Type tool
and point the cursor at the upper left corner to where the text begins.
Take note, make sure that the text cursor is in the form like in the
screenshot below.

8. We can now start typing if you already format the type of font and the font size of your text. I will use the quote from Washington Irving which I copied from The Quote Garden. So, I will just paste it and it will look like this:

You
can also adjust this text area by moving the transforming control
points, the ones looking like small squares on this screenshot.
9. If you are now satisfied with your text and its position, you can hide the working path by pressing CTRL+H in your keyboard or you can delete it from the Path palette if you want. This is now our final template with text around image.
